OUGD503 - Jade Till Photography Logo

I was commissioned by a friend of mine to design a logo. She is currently in the process of setting herself up as a freelance Photographer. I spoke to her about what she wanted. Initially she wanted fairly obvious outcomes, putting forward suggestions such as using an aperture icon or making her name form the shape of a camera. I managed to dissuade her from this and we decided that a monogram would look much more professional and more attractive to the types of clients she is aiming her business at. The initials of her name, 'J' &'T' are characters that work well in conjunction with one another.

I did a couple of pages of sketches and then came back to her for feedback. I was expecting to have to make a few changes but she was really pleased with some of the sketches and asked me to mock them up digitally.

Above are some of the outcomes that I discarded. Although I did like the design on paper I felt that the other monogram was much more effective.

I made a few changes to the sketches and combined a couple of the variations to make the most balanced composition I could. I wanted a typeface that was neutral but elegant and I decided upon  Gill Sans for this. I used a frame similar to that seen in a cameras viewfinder, I made this frame a golden rectangle as this is proven to be visually pleasing. The client was really happy with the outcome, she applied it to her Facebook page and will also be using it for her website.
