OUGD504 - Augmented Design - Development

All of my inital ideas for the poster design were based around the objects sit- ting on the shelves as this is what the project is trying to stop. One idea stood out to me. The use of of pop ups not only meets the augmented aspect of the brief but will add aesthetic appeal to the design.
The poster would be fairly long so when folded up it will still be a good size. I want the poster to work when folded up but also when it is flat.
I made a rough prototype to figure out where the folds will need to be. When I print this it will have to be on rigid stock so the pop ups fold out properly.

I experimented with different gradients and tints of the yellow colour I used for my website. The colour not only links it to the site but makes the poster stand out as it is such a bold bright colour.

Shown above are the two outcomes that I came up with. After feedback I decided to use the one shown directly above. I felt on the other outcome, the gradients blend together too much. Also I like the use of stacked horiontal lines; they added texture and also fit with the concept of shelving.

The use of stickers fits with the theme of guerrilla artwork and will grab the attention of my target audience. I wanted to use the stickers as way markers for the objects. To do this I would use a QR code which links you to Google maps.

I really liked this idea but decided it wasn’t actually viable after trying to put it together. Not only was the image really unclear but I am not sure whether the QR code will work.

For this design I chose to use a golden rectangle as the sticker size. I used yellow and black to make the stickers stand out and also as it links with the colour scheme of the website. I experimented using both an organic looking line and line using right angles.
I used highlighted text as it looked two plain left as it was.

My original idea for the third print outcome was a zine. I realised that to make the zine worthwhile I would have to use the large majority of the content from my website and as the campaign is meant to advertise the website I decided this wouldn’t make any sense.
I started thinking about some alternative print outcomes. The two ideas that I liked best were a flyer with a maze on it and a map.
After some feedback I decided to move forward with the maze. I felt the map was a bit boring for an ad campaign, it wouldn’t instantly catch the consumers attention unlike the maze.

I started drawing out the map roughly but realised that I had no idea how to draw a maze. I was struggling and decided to look online. I found a tutorial which made it really simple.
I incorporated type into the maze with the name of one of my objects. I intend to make a few of these with different objects names in the maze. I used Gotham Black as the typeface as it was bold and and uses simple geometric lines and angles which is perfect for the maze. I was initially going to use SaxMono, the font I have used for the rest of the outcomes but this wouldn’t have worked for the maze due to the stroke weight.

I wanted the flyer to be double sided, one side with the maze on and the other displaying the item that’s name was written in the maze. I used the maze as the background and added colour. I feel the shapes in the maze are really aesthetically pleasing and using this as part of the design links both sides of the flyer. I used drop shadows with grain and halftone
dots within the design as I feel these graphic elements look inspired by graffiti and street art.
I warped the maze in the background (intending to make it look like a curtain,) I feel this adds value to the objects.

For the reverse side of the flyer I decided to keep the design as simple as possible so it didn’t distract from the maze. I like the way it contrasts with the fairly busy graphic on the other side of the flyer.
I will digitally print these designs on a fairly thick matte stock. The matte finish will allow people to draw on the flyer easily.

I had the idea of using the maze not only as a flyer but also a large flyposter. Probably a2 in size.
The poster invites people to complete the maze and the spray paint can icon makes it clear that I want people to paint directly onto the poster. Obviously most people will not carry spray paint but those who do are part of my target audience and this will capture their attention.
